The United States military disabled a commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday after the ship allegedly attempted to breach a naval blockade of Iran, US Central Command (Centcom) announced.
According to a statement from Centcom reported by Middle East Eye, a US military aircraft fired on the vessel as it tried to exit regional waters following a port call in Iran.
Precision Strike on the Vessel
Centcom stated that the commercial ship, which was sailing under the flag of St Kitts and Nevis, had recently visited an Iranian port. As the vessel attempted to leave the area in violation of the blockade, US forces intervened.
Before opening fire, the US military ordered the ship's crew to evacuate the specific areas of the vessel that were to be targeted. Following the warning, a US aircraft deployed precision munitions aimed at the ship's stern to disable its propulsion and steering capabilities.
No immediate details were provided regarding the condition of the crew, the specific identity of the vessel, or the nature of the cargo it was carrying at the time of the interception.
